Active cases down, only one new local COVID case

The Arkansas Department of Health reported one new COVID-19 case in Union County Sunday, bringing the cumulative total of cases identified locally to 892. The cases in the county were made up of 870 confirmed cases, up one from Saturday, and 22 probable cases, no change from Saturday.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests that confirmed cases are determined by are more sensitive than the antigen tests that determine probable cases.

The ADH reported 27 new negative test results returned from Union County Sunday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 3.6% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 9,314 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 8,422 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 10.6%.

Seven new recoveries were reported in Union County Sunday, making the total number of local residents considered recovered from the virus 821. Active cases in the county dropped by six Sunday to 34, representing 3.8% of all the cases identified locally. The active cases in Union County Sunday included 29 confirmed cases and four probable cases.

No new local deaths attributable to COVID-19 were reported Sunday. Thirty-six Union County residents have died as a result of the virus. In the Southwest Public Health Region, where Union County is located, 98 people were hospitalized due to the virus Sunday, including 42 in intensive care units and 23 on ventilator support.

The cumulative number of cases in Arkansas grew by 487 Sunday to reach 81,242. The cases in the state Sunday included 78,735 confirmed cases, up 475 from Saturday, and 2,507 probable cases, up 12 from Saturday.

There were 72,602 Arkansans considered recovered Sunday, up 551 from Saturday. Active cases in the state dropped by 87 to 7,327 Sunday, representing 9% of all the cases identified in Arkansas. The active cases in the state were made up of 6,965 confirmed cases and 362 probable cases.

The deaths of 23 Arkansans that resulted from COVID-19 were reported Sunday, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,308, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.6%. There were 452 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus on Sunday, including 211 in ICUs and 86 on ventilator support.

Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 950,893 test results have returned to the ADH, including 869,448 negatives, indicating a positivity rate for the state of 8.5%.

At 4 p.m., Johns Hopkins University reported 7,104,943 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 2,750,459 people were considered recovered, leaving 4,149,763 cases — 58.4% — active nationwide. There had been 204,721 deaths attributable to the virus in the U.S. by Sunday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 2.9%.

Johns Hopkins reported 32,942,810 COVID-19 cases worldwide Sunday afternoon. Of those, 22,783,475 people were considered recovered, leaving 9,163,752 cases — 27.8% — active around the world. There had been 995,583 deaths attributable to the virus by Sunday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 3%.
