Six new COVID cases, two new deaths reported in county

The Arkansas Department of Health reported six new COVID-19 cases in Union County Friday, bringing the cumulative total of cases identified locally to 880. The total number of cases in the county was made up of 857 confirmed cases, up three from Thursday, and 23 probable cases, up three from Thursday.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests that confirmed cases are determined by are more sensitive than the antigen tests that determine probable cases.

Two Union County residents’ deaths that were caused by COVID-19 were reported on Friday as well. Thirty-four local residents have died as a result of the virus, indicating a local COVID mortality rate — the percentage of those who have contracted the virus and died as a result of it — of 3.9%.

The ADH reported 430 new negative test results returned from Union County Friday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 1.4% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 9,261 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 8,381 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 10.5%. The state has a target goal of 10% positivity or less.

Two new recoveries were reported in Union County Friday, bringing the total number of local residents considered recovered to 810. The number of active cases in the county grew by two to reach 35 Friday, representing 4% of all the cases identified locally. Active cases in the county were made up of 28 confirmed cases and seven probable cases on Friday.

In the Southwest Public Health Region, where Union County is located, 92 people were hospitalized due to the virus on Friday, including 43 in intensive care units and 24 on ventilator support.

The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Arkansas grew by 897 Friday to reach 79,946. The cases identified in Arkansas were made up of 77,472 confirmed cases, up 796 from Thursday; and 2,474 probable cases, up 101 from Thursday.

There were 71,426 Arkansans considered recovered from the virus Friday, up 689 from Thursday. Active cases in the state grew by 188 to reach a total of 7,249, representing 9.1% of all the cases that have been identified in Arkansas. The active cases in the state Friday were made up of 6,830 confirmed cases and 419 probable cases.

The deaths of 20 Arkansans who died as a result of COVID-19 were reported Friday, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,266, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.6%. There were 478 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus Friday, including 224 in ICUs and 95 on ventilator support.

Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 936,350 test results have returned to the ADH, including 856,196 negatives, indicating a positivity rate for the state of 8.5%.

At 4:15 p.m. Friday, Johns Hopkins University reported 7,019,232 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 2,710,183 people were considered recovered, leaving 4,105,620 cases — 58.5% — active nationwide. There had been 203,429 deaths attributable to the virus in the U.S. by Friday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 2.9%.

Johns Hopkins reported 32,386,999 COVID-19 cases worldwide Friday afternoon. Of those, 22,286,196 people were considered recovered, leaving 9,115,577 cases — 28.1% — active around the world. There had been 985,226 deaths attributable to the virus by Friday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 3%.
