El Dorado cancels football game against Jonesboro

Due to COVID-19 concerns, El Dorado’s home football against Jonesboro, scheduled for Friday night at Memorial Stadium, was canceled on Thursday.

The El Dorado School District released this statement on Thursday afternoon:

“Due to some players being quarantined because of COVID-19, the game between the El Dorado Wildcats and the Jonesboro Golden Hurricanes on September 25 has been canceled. The game has been ruled a ‘no contest.’ The status of the game between the El Dorado Wildcats and Pine Bluff Zebras on October 2 will be determined at a later date.”

It was reported at least one member of El Dorado’s football team tested positive since the Magnolia game last Friday.

“Anyone that purchased tickets in advance may return the tickets for a refund. They must present the ticket for a refund,” said El Dorado athletic director Phillip Lansdell.

Neither Lansdell nor football coach Steven Jones would make a statement on the record about the situation.

The athletic director said, as of Thursday, the football game was the only event canceled.

Friday’s game was to be the 6A-East opener for both schools. Jonesboro has a 1-2 non-conference record while the Wildcats are 0-3.

As a no-contest, the football game won’t have any playoff implications.
