One new local COVID case, recoveries near 800

The Arkansas Department of Health reported only one new COVID-19 case in Union County Monday, bringing the cumulative total of cases identified in the county to 841. Confirmed cases in the county increased by one, to 826, and there was no change in the number of probable cases from Sunday to Monday, of which there are 15 locally.

Confirmed cases are determined by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests, which, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control, are more sensitive than antigen tests, which determine probable cases.

The ADH reported 64 new negative test results returned from Union County on Monday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 1.5% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 8,742 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 7,901 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 9.6%.

In the Southwest Public Health Region of Arkansas, where Union County is located, there were 87 people hospitalized because of the virus Monday, including 48 who were in intensive care units and 24 on ventilator support.

The number of recoveries in Union County continued on an upward trend Monday, increasing by three to reach 786. Active cases correspondingly dropped by two from Sunday to 23 on Monday, representing 2.7% of all the cases that have been identified locally. Most active cases on Monday were confirmed cases, of which there were 20 remaining active; and the other three active cases were probable cases.

No new local deaths attributable to COVID-19 were reported Monday. Thirty-one Union County residents have died as a result of the virus.

In Arkansas, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases grew by 641 on Monday to reach 76,364. There were 596 new confirmed cases reported Monday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases identified in the state to 74,286; and 45 new probable cases reported, bringing the total number of probable cases identified in the state to 2,078 Monday.

There were 68,456 Arkansans considered recovered on Monday, up 603 from Sunday. The number of active cases in the state grew to 6,706, made up of 6,299 confirmed cases and 407 probable cases. Active cases made up 8.8% of all the cases that had been identified in Arkansas by Monday.

Sixteen Arkansans’ deaths that were caused by COVID-19 were reported Monday, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,197, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.6%. There were 439 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus on Monday, including 228 in ICUs and 95 on ventilator support.

Arkansas surpassed a testing milestone Monday, nearing one million test results reported. Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 901,625 results have been reported, including 825,097 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 8.5%.

At 5:15 p.m. Monday, Johns Hopkins reported 6,830,209 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 2,590,695 were considered recovered, leaving 4,039,668 cases — 59.1% — active nationwide. There had been 199,756 deaths attributable to the virus in the U.S. by Monday afternoon, according to Johns Hopkins, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 2.9%.

Johns Hopkins reported 31,180,434 COVID-19 cases worldwide Monday afternoon. Of those, 21,299,110 were considered recovered, leaving 8,919,092 cases — 28.6% — active around the world. There had been 962,232 deaths attributable to the virus by Monday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 3.1%.
