Lion's Club set to hold 2A-6 competition

Parkers Chapel and Junction City will play host to the 2020 2A-6 Conference Golf Tournament, which tees off at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at the Lion’s Club.

The tournament will be 18 holes. Each team plays four golfers with the best three scores counting.

The eight-team field includes PC, Junction City, Spring Hill, Foreman, Horatio, Caddo Hills, Fordyce and Gurdon.

Seven of these schools have boys’ teams and five have girls’ teams. Some schools will enter individual competitors.

The top two girls' and boys' teams will qualify for the state tournament in addition to the next four individuals not part of a qualifying team. Those individuals must also meet the new AAA requirement of a cut score of 89 for boys and 107 for girls in order to qualify. The team members do not have to meet the cut score requirements, only the individuals trying to qualify.

Parkers Chapel is the defending two-time champion in the boys’ race and a favorite to remain on top this year. The Lady Trojans will also be in the hunt.

“Parkers Chapel has the potential to be the boys conference champions for the third year in a row,” said PC coach Mona Williams. “Since we have a complete girls team this year, we have the potential to be the girls conference champions as well for the first time in at least nine years. We need to stay healthy, control our emotions, maintain our stamina, be patient, and make good decisions on shots.”

Parkers Chapel’s teams have been busy this season but most of their events have been 9-hole matches.

“We don't play the back nine in our tournaments as often so our players will practice that side heavily over the weekend and on Monday,” Williams said. “The back nine can give us the potential to make up some ground in an 18-hole tournament because it tends to play a little harder than the front.”

Williams listed Spring Hill and Fordyce as teams to watch in the boys’ division. For the girls, Spring Hill has been strong all season, battling back-and-forth with the Lady Trojans.

“We have, thankfully, prevailed over all the teams we have had the opportunity to play in our conference so far this year so we know we can win as a team if we do what it takes,” Williams said. “Individually, both Reid (Cates) and Bella (Frisby) have goals for themselves as they always do. They are very driven and competitive by nature. They will do all they can, as will their teammates, to meet their individual goals and help their teams make it to the state tournament.”
