Area students recognized, awarded

Students from El Dorado and other areas of the state were recognized this week at Sewanee and South Arkansas Community College.

El Dorado native Inducted into Order of the Gown at Sewanee

Kenneth Luke Alderson of El Dorado was inducted into the Order of the Gown at the University of the South during a ceremony held on Sept. 4, 2020. Alderson is the son of Kenneth S. Alderson and Alison R. Alderson.

The Order of the Gown is an academic honor society and a unique student government body among U.S. colleges and universities. Since 1875 the Order of the Gown has remained the body responsible for maintaining the spirit, traditions, and ideals of the University of the South. The wearing of the gown is both a sign of academic achievement and a promise to continue the ideals and traditions of the University.

The University of the South is a nationally recognized university comprising a College of Arts and Sciences and a distinguished School of Theology. Students accept SouthArk scholarships

Aurayia Simpson of Monticello, a registered nursing major at South Arkansas Community College, has accepted a Receiving Education Achievement Close to Home Scholarship to attend the school this fall.

The member of Phi Theta Kappa and the National Society of Leadership and Success is a 1998 graduate of Dumas High School.

Amanda Stewart of Monroe, Louisiana, a registered nursing major at South Arkansas Community College, has accepted a Health Sciences Endowed Scholarship to attend the school this fall.

She is a 1997 graduate of Ouachita High School in Monroe.

Kurt Tate of Dermott, a physical therapist assistance major at South Arkansas Community College, has accepted a William R. and Cacilia Howard Endowed Scholarship to attend the school this fall.

The 2019 graduate of Monticello High School is the son of Florence Bittle and Joe Bittle.

McKenzie Tate of El Dorado, an arts and sciences major at South Arkansas Community College, has accepted a Jodie Mahony Endowed Scholarship to attend the school this fall.

The 2019 graduate of El Dorado High School is the daughter of Kathy McElveen.

Romona Tolbert of El Dorado, an early-childhood education major at South Arkansas Community College, has accepted a Mabel Stratton Powell Endowed Scholarship to attend the school this fall.

She is a 1990 graduate of El Dorado High School.

Tanner Virden of Hampton, a 2020 graduate of El Dorado High School, has accepted a Freshman Recognition Scholarship to attend South Arkansas Community College this fall.

In high school, the son of Melissa and James Virden was a member of BETA, National Honor Society, Key Club, Future Business Leaders of America and DECA.

Jordan Vonneumann of El Dorado, an arts and sciences major at South Arkansas Community College, has accepted a Jennifer Baine Scholarship to attend the school this fall.

The daughter of Craig and Lori Hudson is a 2019 graduate of El Dorado High School.

Erin Watkins of Jersey, a 2020 graduate of Hermitage High School, has accepted a Presidential Scholarship to attend South Arkansas Community College this fall.

In high school, she was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the yearbook staff, the art club, the travel club, the basketball team and Junior Rotarians. She was president of the Beta Club and treasurer-reporter of the Class of 2020.

Austina Westbrook of Fordyce, a criminal justice major at South Arkansas Community College, has accepted a Cornerstone General Endowed Scholarship to attend the school this fall.

The 2011 graduate of Fordyce High School is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

Morgan Willis of El Dorado, a 2020 graduate of Parkers Chapel High School, has accepted a Dr. Kermit Parks Public Service Endowed Scholarship to attend South Arkansas Community College this fall.

In high school the honor graduate was a member of Beta Club, the softball team, the color guard, the band, Future Business Leaders of America and Girl Scouts.

She is the daughter of Crystal Willis.

Latreese Wright of Bearden, a 2020 graduate of Bearden High School, has accepted a Valedictorian-Salutatorian Scholarship to attend South Arkansas Community College this fall.

In high school, the daughter of Jeanetta Wright was a member of Beta Club, Upward Bound, Interact Club, the cheerleading squad, the basketball team and the track team.
