Two new local COVID cases, recoveries up

The Arkansas Department of Health reported two new COVID-19 cases in Union County Monday, bringing the cumulative number of cases identified locally to 1,120. The cases in the county Monday included 1,004 confirmed cases, up two from Sunday, and 116 probable cases, no change from Sunday.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests that determine confirmed cases are more sensitive than the antigen tests that determine probable cases.

Eleven new recoveries were reported Monday, making 1,025 Union County residents considered recovered from the virus. There were 46 active cases in the county Monday, down nine from Sunday and representing 4.1% of all the cases identified locally. Active cases in Union County Monday included 29 confirmed cases and 17 probable cases.

No new local deaths attributable to COVID-19 were reported Monday. Forty-nine Union County residents have died as a result of the virus. In the Southwest Public Health Region of Arkansas, where Union County is located, 118 people were hospitalized due to the virus Monday, including 48 in intensive care units and 21 on ventilator support.

The ADH reported 80 new negative test results returned from Union County Monday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 2.4% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 12,728 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 11,608 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 8.8%.

In Arkansas, the cumulative number of cases rose by 612 to reach 106,727 Monday. The cases in the state on Monday included 99,410 confirmed cases, up 530 from Sunday, and 7,317 probable cases, up 82 from Sunday.

The deaths of 21 Arkansans that resulted from COVID-19 were reported Monday, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,833, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.7%. There were 634 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus Monday, including 255 in ICUs and 97 on ventilator support.

There were 95,314 Arkansans considered recovered from the virus Monday, up 786 from Sunday. Active cases in the state dropped by 195 to 9,571 Monday, representing 9% of all the cases identified in Arkansas. Active cases in the state on Monday included 7,995 confirmed cases and 1,576 probable cases.

Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 1,342,249 test results have returned to the ADH, including 1,234,713 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 8%.

At 3:30 p.m. Monday, Johns Hopkins University reported 8,679,483 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 3,422,934 people were considered recovered, leaving 5,031,054 cases — 58% — active nationwide. There had been 225,495 deaths attributable to the virus in the U.S. by Monday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 2.6%.

Johns Hopkins reported 43,363,298 COVID-19 cases worldwide Monday afternoon. Of those, 29,034,228 people were considered recovered, leaving 13,171,944 cases — 30.4% — active around the world. There had been 1,157,126 deaths attributable to the virus by Monday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.7%.
