Seven new local COVID cases, active cases near 50

The Arkansas Department of Health reported seven new COVID-19 cases in Union County Friday, bringing the cumulative total of cases identified locally to 1,107. The cases in the county Friday included 996 confirmed cases, up six from Thursday, and 111 probable cases, up one from Thursday.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests that determine confirmed cases are more sensitive than the antigen tests that determine probable cases.

No new local deaths attributable to COVID-19 were reported Friday. Forty-nine Union County residents have died as a result of the virus. In the Southwest Public Health Region of the state, where Union County is located, 113 people were hospitalized due to the virus Friday, including 41 in intensive care units and 21 on ventilator support.

Five new recoveries were reported locally Friday, making 1,009 Union County residents considered recovered from the virus. Active cases in the county increased to 49, up two from Thursday and representing 4.4% of all the cases identified locally. The active cases in the county Friday included 30 confirmed cases and 19 probable cases.

The ADH reported 154 new negative tests returned from Union County Friday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 4.3% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 12,585 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 11,478 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 8.8%.

In Arkansas, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases grew to 104,135 Friday, up 1,337 from Thursday. There were 97,339 confirmed cases in the state Friday, up 1,047 from Thursday, and 6,796 probable cases, up 290 from Thursday.

There were 93,215 Arkansans considered recovered Friday, up 927 from Thursday. Active cases in the state rose by 399 to reach 9,129, a new one-day record in the number of active cases in the state and representing 8.8% of all the cases identified in Arkansas. The active cases in Arkansas Friday included 7,667 confirmed cases and 1,462 probable cases.

The ADH reported the deaths of 10 Arkansans Friday, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,782, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.7%. There were 610 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus Friday, including 237 in ICUs and 92 on ventilator support.

Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 1,312,167 results have returned to the ADH, including 1,207,282 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 7.9%.

At 3:15 p.m. Friday, Johns Hopkins University reported 8,458,554 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 3,353,056 people were considered recovered, leaving 4,881,896 cases — 57.7% — active nationwide. There had been 223,602 deaths attributable to the virus in the U.S. by Friday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 2.6%.

Johns Hopkins reported 42,006,178 COVID-19 cases worldwide Friday afternoon. Of those, 28,423,572 people were considered recovered, leaving 12,441,847 cases — 29.6% — active around the world. There had been 1,140,759 deaths attributable to the virus by Friday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.7%.
