Local COVID recoveries top 1K as eight new local cases reported

The Arkansas Department of Health reported eight new COVID-19 cases in Union County Wednesday, bringing the cumulative total of cases identified locally to 1,089. The cases in the county Wednesday included 982 confirmed cases, up two from Tuesday, and 107 probable cases, up six from Tuesday.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests that determine confirmed cases are more sensitive than the antigen tests that determine probable cases.

Three new recoveries were reported Wednesday, making 1,001 Union County residents considered recovered from the virus. Active cases increased by five Wednesday to reach 41, representing 3.8% of all the cases identified locally. The active cases in the county Wednesday included 19 confirmed cases and 22 probable cases.

No new local deaths attributable to COVID-19 were reported Wednesday. Forty-seven Union County residents have died as a result of the virus. In the Southwest Public Health Region of the state, where Union County is located, 115 people were hospitalized due to the virus Wednesday, including 42 in intensive care units and 20 on ventilator support.

The ADH reported 191 new negative test results returned from Union County Wednesday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 4% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 12,227 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 11,138 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 8.9%.

In Arkansas, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases grew by 1,155 to reach 101,596 Wednesday. The cases in the state on Wednesday included 95,399 confirmed cases, up 981 from Tuesday, and 6,197 probable cases, up 174 from Tuesday.

There were 91,317 Arkansans considered recovered from the virus Wednesday, up 1,034 from Tuesday. The number of active cases in the state grew by 98 to reach 8,520 Wednesday, representing 8.4% of all the cases in the state. The active cases in Arkansas Wednesday included 7,272 confirmed cases and 1,248 probable cases.

The ADH reported the deaths of 23 Arkansans that resulted from COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,751, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.7%. There were 626 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus Wednesday, including 241 in ICUs and 94 on ventilator support.

Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 1,282,654 results have returned to the ADH, including 1,180,364 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 7.9%.

At 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Johns Hopkins University reported 8,319,271 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 3,295,426 people were considered recovered, leaving 4,802,184 cases — 57.7% — active nationwide. There had been 221,816 deaths attributable to the virus in the U.S. by Wednesday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 2.7%.

Johns Hopkins reported 41,061,138 COVID-19 cases worldwide Wednesday afternoon. Of those, 27,985,171 people were considered recovered, leaving 11,947,741 cases — 29.1% — active around the world. There had been 1,128,226 deaths attributable to the virus by Wednesday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.7%.
