One new local COVID case reported, recoveries approach 1,000

The Arkansas Department of Health reported one new COVID-19 case in Union County Monday, bringing the cumulative number of cases identified locally to 1,073. There were 976 confirmed cases in the county Monday, no change from Sunday, and 97 probable cases, up one from Sunday.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests that determine confirmed cases are more sensitive than the antigen tests that determine probable cases.

There were 994 Union County residents considered recovered from the virus Monday, up seven from Sunday. Active cases in the county dropped by six to reach 32 Monday, representing 3% of all the cases in the county. The active cases in Union County Monday included 18 confirmed cases and 14 probable cases.

According to a report on COVID cases in nursing homes around the state produced by the ADH and dated Oct. 16, there were six active cases, three in workers and three in residents, at Courtyard Healthcare and Rehabilitation as of that date; and 10 active cases, eight in residents and two in workers, at Hudson Memorial Nursing Home.

The report shows 30 recovered residents and 31 recovered workers at Courtyard, as well as seven residents who died as a result of the virus during a previous outbreak at the facility. According to the report, 38 residents and 34 workers at Hudson are considered recovered, while 20 residents there have died as a result of the virus.

There were no new local deaths attributable to COVID-19 reported Monday. Forty-seven Union County residents have died as a result of the virus. In the Southwest Public Health Region of Arkansas, where Union County is located, there were 113 people hospitalized due to the virus Monday, including 36 in intensive care units and 21 on ventilator support.

The ADH reported 49 new negative test results returned from Union County Monday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 2% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 11,915 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 10,842 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 9%.

In Arkansas, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases grew by 531 to reach 99,597 Monday. The cases in the state Monday included 93,790 confirmed cases, up 434 from Sunday, and 5,807 probable cases, up 97 from Sunday.

There were 89,217 Arkansans considered recovered from the virus Monday, up 767 from Sunday. The number of active cases in the state decreased by 246 to reach 8,658 Monday, representing 8.7% of all the cases in the state. The active cases in Arkansas Monday included 7,450 confirmed cases and 1,208 probable cases.

The ADH also reported the deaths of 10 Arkansans that resulted from COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,714, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.7%. There were 604 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus on Monday, including 248 in ICUs and 95 on ventilator support.

Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 1,260,126 test results have returned to the ADH, including 1,159,923 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 7.9%.

At 3:15 p.m. Monday, Johns Hopkins University reported 8,189,710 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 3,234,183 people were considered recovered, leaving 4,735,577 cases — 57.8% — active nationwide. There had been 219,950 deaths attributable to the virus in the U.S. by Monday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 2.7%.

Johns Hopkins reported 40,256,991 COVID-19 cases worldwide Monday afternoon. Of those, 27,552,089 people were considered recovered, leaving 11,588,842 cases — 28.8% — active around the world. There had been 1,116,060 deaths attributable to the virus by Monday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.8%.
