SMACKOVER – A trio of big plays came back to haunt Smackover, as Rison scored three times in under two minutes to break open a close game en route to a 54-6 win Friday night in 6-3A play.
The Wildcats (4-1, 3-0) stayed undefeated in league play while extending their winning streak to four.
The Bucks (0-4, 0-3) remained winless on the season.
Trailing 12-0 in the second quarter, the Bucks sliced the lead in half on a 45-yard strike from Austin Goodwin to D’Kylan Hildreth at the 9:38 mark.
The Bucks then kept the momentum by recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and had the ball at Rison’s 36.
Goodwin again connected with Hildreth on a 20-yard touchdown pass that would’ve tied the game, but a penalty negated the play, and the drive ended with the Bucks failing to score.
Rison then extended their lead with Shaquan Reeves scoring on a 13-yard run with 1:41 left in the half, and his successful run on the 2-point conversion made it 20-6.
The Wildcats’ defense then came up with a huge play, as Reeves intercepted a pass on the final play of the half and returned it 70 yards for a score. Reeves added the 2-point conversion to give Rison a 28-6 edge at intermission.
The Wildcats then opened the second half by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown to push the lead to 35-6 before winning by the final margin.
Rison hosts McGehee next week, while Smackover travels to Barton.
