Trojans have sights set on defending league title

The 2019-20 season was one of accomplishment for Parkers Chapel, who won the 8-2A regular season title.

However, the Trojans ended the year on a down note, losing their last four games of the season that ended with a loss to Dierks in the regional tournament.

Now the Trojans enter the 2020-21 season with a wealth of newcomers, but for coach Josh Langley, the expectations have not changed.

“Our expectations are always high,” Langley said. “I believe in our kids and our kids believe in what we do as a program.”

The Trojans will hit the floor Friday night to host Crossett after pausing team activities due to COVID-19 protocols. Parkers Chapel opened its season earlier this month with a 66-41 loss to Star City.

Senior Evan Younger is the lone starter back and will get the nod at small forward.

“I think opposing teams will really focus on him and I know he welcomes that,” Langley said.

Langley said a combination of sophomore Chris Greer, senior Blake Caldwell and sophomore Jaylen Gray will work at point guard.

Senior Nik Garcia brings experience as the primary shooting guard.

Junior Braydon McGoogan and sophomore Brody Goodwin were lauded by Langley for their work during the offseason.

McGoogan could slot in either at shooting guard or small forward, while Goodwin could get minutes at small forward and power forward.

Edison Thompson, a senior, is also expected to be a big contributor for the Trojans.

“He is another guy that should play a lot,” Langley said. “His shot has improved and he already gets to the rim well.”

Junior Mason Dougan is slated to be the Trojans’ center.

“He is an outstanding rebounder and has shown promise as a shot blocker,” Langley said.

As far as the 8-2A is concerned, Langley said several teams will be in the mix to contend for the league title.

“Conference-wise, I think there are several teams with a legit shot,” Langley said. “We have several teams bringing back a lot of key players. It’s going to be a grind and we will have to bring it every night if we want to stay at the top.”

After going 17-11 a year ago, Langley said defense will hold the key for the Trojans if they are to duplicate their success from a year ago.

“Our keys to success this season will be staying discipline on defense,” Langley said. “Last year, we played a little more aggressive and this year I believe we will need to be much more physical and disciplined.

“Offensively, it will be taking care of the ball. We have some guys that will be inexperienced and will have to adjust and grow up quick. If we can play tough, physical defense and take care of the ball on offense, then we will be tough.”
