Districts carry on: School round up for the week of May 4

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and graduation approaches, local school districts are keeping students and families updated.

Here’s the latest news:

El Dorado School District

EHS announced Thursday yard signs are being made with each senior’s picture, which will be placed around the drive in front of the school. The school also announced Taylon Steel agreed to go to the school to take photos of seniors who haven’t already taken a picture in their cap and gown. According to a Facebook post, Steele will contact those students and schedule a time to take photos.

Washington Middle School announced LANXESS awarded it a classroom grant to purchase iPads for the 6th grade science classrooms. The company also issued a check to EHS to help fund the new biotechnology class. Hugh Goodwin Elementary School was also awarded a check to go toward technology upgrades for being in the top 5% of schools in Arkansas.

Registration is due May 8 for the South Arkansas Developmental Center summer program, which will last June 1 - August 7. The program is for students with a developmental disability and those who receive at least one therapy (speech, occupational or physical). Strong-Huttig School District

In an email to the News-Times, Superintendent Kimberly Thomas said someone in the district tested positive for COVID-19.

“We are following the guidance of the Arkansas Department of Health and CDC guidelines,” Thomas said. “The person has been quarantined and following the recommendations of a physician. Everyone who has come in contact with this person has been notified by the Arkansas Department of Health to self quarantine for 14 days. We ask that you respect the privacy of those involved and follow the guidance set forth by the Arkansas Department of Health and the CDC. Smackover-Norphlet School District

The district is asking seniors to submit a 20-second video by today of them in their cap and gown. In the video, students should discuss their future plans and thank someone who was their biggest supporter. Videos should be appropriate for all ages and submitted to [email protected] or texted to 870-725-4889.

Mr. and Miss SHS election votes are due by May 8. Students should check their emails for the election form.

Parkers Chapel School District

The next board meeting will be at 6 p.m. May 11 in the Administration Building.

Junction City School District

Junction City Elementary school cookie dough fundraiser orders will be ready for pickup at 10:30 a.m. May 6. When you arrive, the order will be placed outside by the door.
