15th COVID death reported in Union County along with 10 new cases

The Arkansas Department of Health reported 10 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Union County Thursday, bringing the cumulative number of cases identified in the county to 345.

The ADH also reported the death of a Union County resident attributed to the virus, making 15 local residents who have died as a result of COVID-19. The local COVID mortality rate was 4.34% Wednesday.

Of the cumulative cases, 270 were considered recovered Thursday, another increase of 10 from Wednesday. Active cases decreased by one from Wednesday to 60 due to the death of the Union County resident that was reported. Active cases represented 17.39% of the total number of cases that had been identified in the county Wednesday.

No changes were reported Wednesday in any of the local congregate living settings where COVID-19 cases have been identified, which include Courtyard Healthcare and Rehabilitation, where one resident case remains active; Advanced Health and Rehab of Union County, where two worker cases remain active; Timberlane Health and Rehab, where three worker case remains active; and Community Living Arrangements, where one worker case remains active.

Of the Union County residents who have died as a result of the virus, seven were residents of Courtyard Healthcare and Rehabilitation, making up 46.66% of those local residents who have died due to COVID-19. Active cases within congregate living settings in the county accounted for 11.66% of the active cases in the county Thursday.

The ADH reported 28 new negative test results returned from Union County, indicating a one-day positivity rate for the county of 26.31% based on the number of results returned and new cases. In all, 4,012 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, with 3,667 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 8.59%.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Arkansas increased Thursday by 1,013, representing the second-largest one-day increase in cases the state has seen yet. In all, 36,259 cases have been identified in the state.

Of the state’s cumulative number of cases, 28,864 were considered recovered Thursday, leaving 7,009 cases — 19.33% of the cumulative total — active statewide.

Governor Asa Hutchinson reported the COVID-19 related deaths of six Arkansans Thursday, bringing the state’s death toll to 386, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.06%. There were 480 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus Thursday, up six from Wednesday, and 107 on ventilator support, representing no change from Wednesday.

Hutchinson said the state ran 5,487 COVID-19 tests in the 24 hour period between Wednesday and Thursday, which would indicate a one-day positivity rate for the state of 18.46%. Since the state began testing for the virus, 453,684 tests have been reported to the ADH, with 417,425 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 7.99%.

“We still need to do better in terms of our testing,” Hutchinson said.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the United States had topped four million COVID-19 cases by 7:10 p.m. Thursday, reaching 4,032,430 by that time. Of those, 1,233,269 were considered recovered, leaving 2,654,994 cases — 65.84% — active nationwide. There had been 144,167 deaths attributable to the virus in the U.S. by Thursday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 3.57%.

Johns Hopkins reported 15,435,114 COVID-19 cases worldwide Thursday afternoon. Of those, 8,759,608 were considered recovered, leaving 6,043,695 cases — 39.15% — active around the world. There had been 631,811 deaths attributable to the virus by Thursday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 4.09%.
