Born on Nov. 5, 1956, in El Dorado, Rev. James Shutes was the son of Carl Shutes Rosie Bell Shutes and Ovell Shutes. James graduated from El Dorado High School in 1975.

He was called to preach in 1983 and was ordained under the Rev. Frank Townsend at New Olive Branch Baptist Church. James began pastoring at Sweet Home Baptist Church in Smackover and Batts Chapel in Hutting. He united with Douglass Missionary Baptist Church and returned home to New Olive Branch Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful member until his death on Jan. 15, 2020.

Preceding him in death are Carl "Peter Rabbit" Shutes," Belinda Shutes, Faye Shutes and Clifton Smith.

Those left to celebrate his life, his wife Mary Shutes; daughters, Sherina Moore (Mozell), Shelise Shutes and Tiffany George; sons, James (Kleena) Shutes and Justin (Shawna) Shutes; three brothers, Chester Shutes, Darnell (Benny) and Larry Ferguson; and 11 grandchildren, one great-grandson, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Public visitation will be Friday, Jan. 24, 2020 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Sims Mortuary. Family hour to follow from 6-7 p.m. Funeral service will be on Jan. 25, 2020, at 11 a.m. at New Olive Branch.
