Junction City wins district tourney crown

HAMPTON - It would seem that Junction City is hitting its stride at the right time of the year.

Cam Frazier had a big game with 22 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks, as the Dragons topped Harmony Grove 71-59 to win the 8-2A District Tournament crown late Friday night.

The win gives the Dragons (15-8) the 8-2A’s top seed for the 2A South Regional Tournament, which starts Wednesday at Fordyce.

The Dragons, who were the No. 3 seed, led 27-25 at intermission, but outscored the eighth-seeded Hornets 18-9 in the third quarter to pull away.

“I think we played okay on defense. Offensively, we weren’t very aggressive in the first half,” said Junction City coach Kendall Hutcheson.

“I think we got a lot more aggressive in the second half. We had a little spurt there where we got four or five run-outs in a row where we ended up shooting layups.

“We played good defense, got some tough shots, Cam Frazier had a couple of blocks that we were able to turn the other way and get some easy layups in transition. It took it from about a four-point ballgame to about a 14-point ballgame real quick.”

Zak Brown had 16 points and six rebounds, while Harlandus Frazier chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds for Junction City.

Harmony Grove (13-16), who won four games in four nights to get to the finals, saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.

Antoine Edwards was one of four players in double figures with 15 points to lead the Hornets.

Xaylon Falls had 14 points, while Jayce Posey and Damion Daniel had 12 points apiece.
