Healthy Humorist: Comedian and M.D., Dr. Brad Nieder will speak at MCSA's annual luncheon.

The Medical Center of South Arkansas will host its annual luncheon, "Healthy Heart. Healthy You." today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the El Dorado Conference Center, 311 S. West Ave.

Formally known as the Go Red Luncheon, the annual event is "all about saving lives," according to event organizers.

"Every story we share about heart disease will encourage someone to take action," a statement on the Facebook page reads. "Knowing the signs and symptoms of heart disease, heart attack and stroke has to get personal."

In addition to providing the community with education on heart disease, health screenings, silent auction and lunch, this year's event will bring a comedic twist with keynote speaker Dr. Brad Nieder. Known as "The Healthy Humorist," Nieder will bring levity to the program as he shares his experiences and how he lived to joke about it.

A physician and comedian, Nieder attended medical school at the University of Colorado and could be found performing at Denver comedy clubs in between classes and studying. After completing his medical training, he began taking his health care humor around the country. Nieder received his Certified Speaking Professional designation in 2011, and has more than 15 years of professional speaking experience.

According to the speaker coordinator for the American Academy of Professional Coders, Nieder proved a great addition to the organization's event.

"Hats off to the Healthy Humorist and his timely message about incorporating more laughter into our lives," the reviewer said. "His material is clever, clean and insightful. He's a Jerry Seinfeld of the medical profession with his hilarious observations. As one coder said to me later, 'Our jobs are so stressful. It felt good to sit there and laugh!' We can all stand to lighten up and enjoy ourselves a little more, and that message came through loud and clear in the presentation."
