One new death, 17 new COVID cases in Union County

The Arkansas Department of Health reported 17 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Union County Tuesday, bringing the cumulative number of cases identified locally to 452.

The ADH also reported one new local death attributable to COVID-19, bringing the total number of Union County residents who have died as a result of the virus to 17. The local COVID mortality rate — the percentage of local residents who have contracted the virus and died as a result of it — was 3.76% Tuesday.

There were 353 Union County residents who were considered to have recovered from the virus on Tuesday, up seven from Monday. Active cases rose to 82, a net increase of nine from Monday. Active cases represented 18.14% of the total number of COVID-19 cases that had been identified in the county on Tuesday.

No changes were reported Tuesday at any of the congregate living settings in Union County where COVID-19 has been identified. Community Living Arrangements still reported one active worker case and Timberlane Health and Rehab still reported two active worker cases. Active COVID-19 cases identified at congregate living facilities represented 3.65% of the total number of active cases in the county Tuesday.

The ADH reported 28 new negative test results returned from Union County on Tuesday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 37.77% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 4,623 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, with 4,171 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 9.77%.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Arkansas grew by 784 Tuesday to reach 45,381. Of those, 38,000 were considered recovered, leaving 6,891 cases — 15.18% of the cumulative number of cases — active statewide.

Fifteen Arkansans’ deaths that resulted from COVID-19 were reported Tuesday, bringing the state’s death toll to 490, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.07%. There was a net increase of 13 Arkansans hospitalized due to COVID-19, bringing the total to 526 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus Tuesday; and a net decrease of seven Arkansans on ventilator support, leaving 101 still utilizing ventilators.

According to the ADH, 5,890 COVID-19 tests were performed on Monday, bringing the total number of tests performed thus far in August to 18,001.

The ADH reported 5,715 new negative test results returned statewide Tuesday, indicating a one-day positivity rate for the state of 12.06% based on the number of new cases and results reported. Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 533,899 results have returned to the ADH, with 488,518 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 8.49%.

According to Johns Hopkins University, there were 4,765,170 COVID-19 cases in the United States at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Of those, 1,528,979 were considered recovered, leaving 3,079,523 cases — 64.62% — active nationwide. There had been 156,668 deaths attributable to the virus by Tuesday evening, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 3.28%.

Johns Hopkins reported 18,448,084 COVID-19 cases worldwide Tuesday evening. Of those, 11,048,174 were considered recovered, leaving 6,701,887 cases — 36.32% — active around the world. There had been 698,023 deaths attributable to the virus by Tuesday evening, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 3.78%.
