Stars ready to begin home workouts

While the coronavirus pandemic has brought sports to a halt, there is still the matter for athletes and coaches to stay prepared for when play resumes.

In the case of the South Arkansas Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams, that means trying to find a way to get offseason work done when access to equipment is limited.

For Nate Davis, SouthArk’s men’s and women’s basketball coach, it starts with his players doing workouts at home, including a set number of push-ups, air-squats, sit-ups and planks that will gradually increase after each week, as well as conditioning and stretches.

“The 12-week conditioning will help keep our student-athletes in shape throughout the summer,” Davis said. “This will improve endurance, increase flexibility, and ultimately aid with their overall health. These simple at home workouts will help improve our student-athletes overall strength. Push-ups help build your chest, triceps and shoulder muscles.

“The air-squats will help with your lower body strength (quadriceps, hamstrings, thighs) as well as your balance. Sit-ups and planks will assist with your overall core strength. Herschel Walker is a great example of someone who shows the benefits of bodyweight training.”

And while it may be difficult for his players to find time to work on developing their games, Davis said a balance between that aspect and staying physically fit must be maintained.

“I don’t feel like you can overstate the importance of one over the other,” Davis said. “You can’t just lay the ball down all summer and expect to pick back up where you left off during the season. However, if you’re not in shape, what good does your dribbling and shooting really do? It’s vital to find time to work on both.”
