El Dorado police are investigating a shooting that occurred late Tuesday afternoon and resulted in the death of a 26-year-old man at a local apartment complex.

At approximately 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a report of at least one shot fired at Hudson Place Apartments and they found Devonta Hill lying on the floor just inside the front entrance of his residence in the 200 block of Hargett.

Capt. Scott Harwell, of the EPD’s Criminal Investigative Division, said Hill was unresponsive and appeared to have sustained a gunshot wound. His wife was on the scene at the time, Harwell said.

Hill was transported by ambulance to Medical Center of South Arkansas. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

His body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory in Little Rock for a medical examination.

Harwell said he expects to have a preliminary report from the crime lab today.

A spent shell casing was recovered from the Hargett Drive residence, said Harwell.

“There does not appear to be any evidence of foul play; however, we’re waiting on the crime lab for an official ruling on the cause of death,” he said.
