An El Dorado couple is scheduled for first appearance hearings today in 35th Judicial District Court on battery charges stemming from a domestic disturbance that sent them both to the hospital.

Earnest T. Berry, 26, of the 800 block of Camp, and Jessica A. Hagood, 25, of the 600 block of Liberty, each face a felony count of second-degree domestic battery.

Hagood’s sister, Andrea Hagood, was also arrested on a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and is expected to appear Oct. 7 in district court.

At approximately 4:45 p.m. Sept. 9, officers responded to a report of a disturbance at the Liberty Street residence where two people were fighting in the front yard.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with Andrea Hagood, who made statements indicating that her sister and Berry were inside the residence and that Jessica Hagood had acted in self-defense.

Police then entered the residence and spoke with Jessica Hagood, noting that she was crying, she was covered in blood, her left eye was swollen shut and she had a tooth missing.

She told officers she wanted to check on Berry to make sure she did not hurt him.

After asking Jessica Hagood to exit the residence, police made contact with Berry, who was bleeding profusely from a severe laceration to the right side of his forehead, according to a police report.

He told police that Hagood, his girlfriend, had struck him in the head with a pot.

Jessica Hagood and Barry were transported to Medical Center of South Arkansas for treatment.

Both were also taken into custody, police said, noting that Andrea became irate following the arrest of her sister and began screaming.

Officers said she ignored requests to calm down and her behavior drew the attention of neighbors who had gathered outside.

Andrea Hagood was subsequently arrested for disorderly conduct and she was issued a citation to appear in district court.

Jessica Hagood later told officers that Berry had accused her stealing his wallet, noting he confronted her just as she arrived home.

She said Berry pulled her from her vehicle and slammed her onto the ground. She then grabbed a pot and struck him in the head with it.

Jessica Hagood said Berry began swinging at her when her sister stood between the pair, striking her several times in the left eye and knocking out her tooth.

Berry told police that he had also acted in self-defense, saying that when he accused Jessica Hagood of taking his wallet, she “reared up at him” and he threw her to the ground.

He said she then grabbed the pot and struck him and the pair began fighting.

A witness reported seeing the Berry and Jessica Hagood fighting, noting that Berry was on top of Jessica at the time.
