GLENWOOD – An incorrect scorecard signed by a player helped Jonesboro claim the 5A State Boys Golf Tournament title Monday at Glenwood Country Club.

El Dorado shot 369 to finish in eighth place at the tournament, led by Preston Howard's 87. Brendan Jones (93), Aaron Ezell (94), Saxon Murphy (95) and Baylor Blackburn (98) rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats.

“Brendan Jones is the lone senior in our golf program this year and with all the golfers returning with this year's experiences, it should bode well for our future,” said El Dorado coach Chris Ezell.

The early holes of the tournament were played under cool (56 degrees), wet windy conditions. Ezell said the sun came out and the later holes were played under warmer temperatures, up to 75 degrees.

“The windy conditions really were difficult to navigate for most of the field,” said Ezell. “Gusts of 15-20 mile per hour winds constantly challenged their abilities to make adjustments and only a few of the more experienced golfers managed it.”

Paragould's Simon McBride was able to lead the way with 67. Lakeside's Cooper Gordon won a playoff to claim runner-up versus Jonesboro's Ben Sherman to finalize the three 5A competitors in next week's High School Overall at Pleasant Valley.
