New bridge to be built east of Norphlet

A bridge east of Norphlet on State Highway 335 will be replaced in the upcoming weeks.

The Arkansas State Highway Commission approved a bid of about $2.7 million to Thomco, Inc. in North Little Rock to replace the bridge over Haynes Creek.

Danny Straessle, public information officer for Arkansas Department of Transportation, said the bridge is being replaced because it's lived out its life.

"This one, for a two-lane road, has pretty well-served its purpose and reached the end of its service," Straessle said.

Straessle said the current bridge was constructed in 1966 and is 229 feet long. The new bridge will be about 260 feet long.

He also said the new bridge will be constructed on a new alignment adjacent to the existing bridge, so traffic will continue on the existing one until the new one is finished.

Straessle said this also means there will be roadwork closer to the completion of the new bridge. Once it's done, access to the current bridge will be blocked off and the bridge will be deconstructed.

The new bridge is expected to be completed in late 2020.
