The Murphy USA El Dorado Shootout is just over a month away and officials have announced that the annual event will benefit the De Soto Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

The Shootout, presented by PepsiCo, is a stop of the Symetra Tour, which brings top female golfers to South Arkansas as they compete for prize money and take a closer step to the LPGA Tour. The event has also become a flagship fundraiser for local United Way agencies over the past five years.

With the selection of the De Soto Area Council as the 2019 beneficiary, local Boy Scouts and leaders will take part in volunteering throughout the event, which is set for April 26-28 at Mystic Creek Golf Club. Founded in 1913, the De Soto Area Council is one of the oldest organizations serving youth in South Arkansas. They received their charter from the Boy Scouts of America in 1919.

According to a news release, Andrew Clyde, president and CEO of Murphy USA, was a scout himself, earning the highest rank as an Eagle Scout.

“As a former Boy Scout, I could not be more excited that this year’s Murphy USA El Dorado Shootout will be benefitting our De Soto Area Council, Boy Scouts of America,” Clyde said in the release. “I have fond memories of my time in the Scouts and can personally attest to the valuable life lessons that this program imparts to the youth who participate in its program.”

The mission of the De Soto Area Council is to prepare young people to make ethical decisions over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. In addition to El Dorado offices, the De Soto Area Council operates Camp De Soto a few miles south of town, often used for summer camps and weekend events.

The release noted that by volunteering during the tournament, scouts and officials will be able to further share information about programs and their impact on the community.
