Museum of Natural Resources preps for February events

The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources on Smackover Highway is gearing up for February, preparing for a whole new round of events for children and adults alike.

According to a news release, at 1 p.m. Feb. 9, the monthly Tinker Time program will feature electric circuits. Participants will learn how they work and make a light up Valentine’s card. And at 2 p.m. Feb. 9, people are invited to learn about backyard birds and take walk through the park to see what birds are within view.

On Feb. 23, the museum will host “The History of Cookies,” which will teach how cookies came about and how an innovation of the 1920s changed cookie history. All participants will decorate two cookies and receive a 1920s cookie recipe. The workshop is presented for free but reservations are required.

At 2 p.m. Feb. 24, author Lyle Blackburn will make a PowerPoint presentation and host a book signing about the history of Bigfoot in Arkansas and the famous Fouke Monster/Boggy Creek case. The release cites a previous visit in 2005 from investigators with the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, who reportedly came to the area to follow up on a Bigfoot sighting on Victor Dumas Road.

Blackburn is a native Texan known for his work in writing, music and film, according to the release. He has written several books, including “The Beast of Boggy Creek” and “Lizard Man,” that reflect his lifelong fascination with legends and sighting reports of unknown creatures. Registration is required for Blackburn’s program as seating is limited.

Registration is suggested for all events, but required for the cookie and Bigfoot programs. For more information, contact the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources 870-725-2877.
