The May edition of the Boomtown Opry will feature headliner David Phelps, a popular Christian music performer.

Known as a Branson, Missouri-style variety show featuring live music, comedy, dancing and other family-friendly entertainment, the Boomtown Opry began presenting monthly shows in the area last spring.

The Boomtown Opry features a house band led by BJ Kyle, who has toured professionally with Colt Ford, Craig Morgan, Tracy Lawrence, Kellie Pickler and others. Local actor/singer Steve Harrell is the emcee and local country duo Southern Koast (Keith Owens and Susan Tolin) provide background vocals.

For the May 4 show, Phelps will be the featured performer, bringing his style and vocal range, which extends more than three octaves, to El Dorado. Phelps, a graduate of Baylor University, spent more than 15 years with the popular Gaither Vocal Band, which received several Dove and Grammy awards, as well as multiple platinum-selling recording projects.

In his solo career, Phelps has been nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year with the Dove Awards and Long Form Video for his Christmas DVD, “O Holy Night.” A live concert DVD from 2012, entitled “David Phelps: Classic,” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Music Video Chart and has been featured on several TV networks. Another recording, “The Best of David Phelps: from the Homecoming Series,” peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Music Video Sales Chart. His most recent recording “Hymnal” was released in 2017 and he sings some treasured Christian hymns.

Phelps lives with his wife and four children at their farm outside of Nashville, Tennessee.

Opening for Phelps at the May 4 show will be Southern Koast, Joel Woollen and comedian Frank Cheek.
