Mayor Veronica Smith-Creer invites the public to city hall for an open discussion on Dec. 11.

Mayor Veronica Smith-Creer wants to celebrate her 50th birthday doing what she does pretty much every other day: serving the residents of El Dorado.

The community is invited to city hall from noon until 1 p.m. Wednesday for a social mixer, during which local residents will have the opportunity to meet with Smith-Creer to share any issues, concerns and ideas on how to improve the quality of life in El Dorado.

"That's what I want for my birthday. That will be your gift to me. I want to hear your ideas on how to help El Dorado flourish," the mayor said during an El Dorado City Council meeting Dec. 5.

Since taking office Jan. 1, Smith-Creer has looked for ways to keep the community engaged in the goings-on of city government.

She has promoted an open-door policy for residents to visit city hall and encouraged city council members to host a series of town hall meetings in their respective wards. The meetings were held earlier this year.

The purpose of the town halls, the mayor said, was to provide residents with a better understanding of the inner workings of the various city departments and to offer the opportunity for citizens to meet face to face with city council members and city department heads.

Those outreach efforts will continue with the mixer Wednesday.

Light refreshments will be served.
