Union County schools went through their final dress rehearsals prior to the start of the 2019 season Friday night with several benefit games.

Each team scored during the 20-minute half with Dexter Crockett scoring on a 60-yard run with Williams drilling the extra point.

The Bucks’ offense also got a big plays from junior running back Keyun Ard and senior Jaqueze Modica.

“We were just trying to run our basic stuff,” said Smackover coach Brian Brown. “Our deal was to get out there and play somebody else. We’ve got some stuff to clean up, but we were able to see some guys we haven’t seen. That’s our focus.”

TROJANS COMPETE

AT HENDERSON STATE

Parkers Chapel came away with a split of two games against Gurdon and Conway Christian at Henderson State.

The Trojans fell to the Go-Devils 14-13, but shut out the Eagles 7-0.

Against Gurdon, Parkers Chapel scored on their first play with Caleb Jacobs connecting with Preston Stivender on an 80-yard strike.

The Trojans’ second score also came through the air with Jacobs throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Blake Caldwell with Stivender making the extra point.

The lone points of the contest between the Trojans and Eagles came on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Jacobs to Trace Shoup.

“I told the kids I was happy,” said Parkers Chapel coach Elliot Jacobs. “We were better today than we were yesterday. We’ve got to work on getting better. We don’t want to be satisfied. We always want more. That’s what we’re trying to teach the kids.”

BULLDOGS PUT

IN EXTRA TIME

Strong scrimmaged Lafayette County at Jerry Burson Field with a bit of a wrinkle added in at the end.

The schools worked a pair overtime sessions with the Bulldogs prevailing thanks to an interception on a two-point conversion attempt.

During the regular part of play, each offense alternated running 10 plays apiece before switching to eight plays per side.

In the first overtime, the Cougars had the ball first, but didn’t score.

Strong then answered with Derrion Davis scoring on a 10-yard run to end the first extra session.

The Bulldogs started the second overtime with the ball, and Davis delivered again, scoring on a 10-yard run while also adding the two-point conversion.

The Cougars scored on the ensuing possession, but their attempt for a tie was thwarted when Jayson Edwards intercepted a pass on the two-point conversion to give the Bulldogs a sweep of the overtimes.

“Our kids competed hard,” said Strong coach Sirl Wright. “We found areas where we need to improve, but we found some bright spots we can build on. We have positive morale coming off the overtimes.”
