State encourages residents to visit Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources

Since 1923, Arkansas State Parks have worked to preserve the state’s history and natural beauty. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or a history buff, there is something for everyone at the nation’s most popular and award-winning state park systems. To celebrate this rich heritage the community is invited to visit the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources for “Legacy Week” beginning Aug. 28 through Sept. 2. Legacy Week is a time to commemorate our state parks, and to explore each park’s unique history and mission.

The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources’ mission is to foster experiences which connect people with the lasting cultural and economic impact from the discovery of oil in south Arkansas during the 1920’s, and brine used in bromine extraction.

This is accomplished through collecting, preserving, and interpreting their ever-changing story. In keeping with this, the museum will be offering a program where visitors can listen to and/or read selected oral histories that describe what life was like during the oil boom. Walk through the past by visiting Smackover’s boomtown street, and stroll along our outside walking path to see machines of the oil industry both during the boom and from later years. Finally find out how today’s oil and brine industries still play a pivotal role in the economy of South Arkansas.

Visitors will leave with a better understanding of how the boom affected people and changed South Arkansas, as well how the museum is preserving this notable legacy.
