El Dorado High School student shot, killed Sunday night

An El Dorado High School student was shot and killed late Sunday night.

Octavius Critton Jr., 17, was discovered by police in the 1200 block of California Street after they responded to a call around 11:30 p.m. at night. Police were directed to Critton by Juston Alex Mayweather, 23, another shooting victim, who police found inside of a house across the street in the 1200 block of Detroit Street.

Mayweather said the shooting happened on California Street. Paramedics pronounced Critton dead at the scene. Mayweather was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. His condition has not been released.

Police have not taken anyone into custody and have not disseminated a suspect description. The EPD Detective Division is processing numerous piece of evidence, according to a police press release, and are asking anyone with information about the ongoing investigation to contact them at 870-881-4810.

Critton’s body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime lab for an autopsy. The El Dorado School District released a statement following his death.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of one of our El Dorado High School students over the weekend,” the statement read. “The El Dorado School District sends our deepest condolences to the family of Octavius Critton. Our sincere sympathies, thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. Counselors will be available for any of our students and staff during this difficult time.”

A morning El Dorado football practice was canceled due to the shooting.
