Five rising seniors at El Dorado High School have been selected to attend the 40th Arkansas Governor’s School.

Each year, high school juniors from across the country are given the option to apply for the summer program and concentrate in a variety of fields. Four hundred students are selected for it.

This year, EHS has five students who will be attending the program. Camden Jones and Nathaneal Marino for Social Science, Eriyunna Miller for English/Language Arts, Aidan Price for Natural Science and DeLaney Virden for Mathematics.

The program will take place from July 7 to Aug. 3 at the Arkansas Tech University campus in Russellville. ATU is hosting Arkansas Governor’s School for the first time in 2019. On-campus leadership for the program is provided by Robin Lasey, associate professor of chemistry at ATU, and Jeff Woods, professor of history at ATU. They are assisted by a committee of ATU faculty, staff and students that includes representation from Arkansas Governor’s School alumni.

The Arkansas Department of Education gifted and talented programs administrator supervises Arkansas Governor’s School with assistance from an advisory council appointed by the governor.

The program was started in 1979 by Bill Clinton when he was governor as a way to provide a unique supplement to curriculum offered at high schools around the state for gifted and talented students.

State funds provide tuition, room, board and instructional materials for each student who attends the four-week program on the site of a residential college campus, leased by the state.
