Flash flood watch in effect until 4 p.m.

2-3 inches of rain possible through this evening

Just a few days after several inches of rain again drenched the area, Union County is under a flash flood watch as storms roll through the region.

The National Weather Service placed the county, along with much of the surrounding region, under a flash flood watch from Wednesday evening until 4 p.m. Thursday, warning that as showers and thunderstorms come through the region, an additional 2 inches to 3 inches of rain is possible. That amount of rain, combined with the heavy rain the region received over the last two weekends, means there’s a higher risk of flash flooding.

“Locally heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding, especially where soils remain very wet from recent heavy rains in southern Arkansas and northern Louisiana,” the weather service stated.

Much of the state is at risk of severe weather Thursday, with Union County being in an area marked as being at risk of both marginal and slight risk of severe weather The eastern part of the state is more likely to receive the stronger or more severe storms, according to the weather service, and damaging wind gusts along with large hail will be the primary threats. The weather service is warning that “a tornado or two remain possible.”

The weather service said the severe weather threat should end by late Thursday afternoon or early evening.
