SAAC to offer new family Spanish art class

Local artist and art teacher, Maria Villegas, will teach a new Spanish art class for children and their parents to enjoy together at the South Arkansas Arts Center.

SAAC is gearing up for spring Arts Academy registration, which is open now. The new Spanish art class will bring parents and kindergarten through first grade students together to enjoy learning a new language through fun art activities, including songs and lots of repetition.

“Scientists discovered that any content learned is better fixed in the brain with a strong emotional input,” Villegas said. “Also, the more sensory impressions we have with all the senses, the better the capacity to memorize events. So in this class, students and parents will be exposed to visual, tactile auditory stimulus and content, creating more lasting language memories. Having parents and students in the same class increases the emotional level during class.

“This is a good opportunity for parents who otherwise might not have a play time and learning time with their children to share quality time with them. Some parents think they are not able to learn a second language when they are older. By having fun activities in the classroom and exercising a new language at home, parents would learn more as they practice with their children. Learning a second language can be difficult and exhausting. This Spanish art class will add energy to the gathering and will be a fabulous thing to share between parents and child,” she added.
