JAMES N. BARTON

James Nathan Barton, of Huttig, formerly of El Dorado, died on Thursday, July 5th, from an aggressive cancer. Jim’s family will receive visitors at Youngs Funeral Home in El Dorado on Thursday, July 12, 2018 from 6 until 8 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. James was born in Warren, on Nov. 11, 1953. He was the middle son of Viola and John Barton of Vick, (later of El Dorado). He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Martha, a grandson, Brandon Deal and a step-daughter, Teresa Dixon McPeak. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Cathy Thompson Barton, sons James Allen Barton (Sarah), Nathan Grant Barton and Stephen Glenn Barton, daughter Rae Lynn Barton Deal (Chad), step-children Laura Nicholson and Beau Brown. He is also survived by his brothers Doug Barton and Mark Barton (Janice). Jim’s joy in life was seeing his grandchildren, Garrett and Joshua Deal, Matthew and Miranda Barton and Everleigh Nicholson. He will also be missed by his little dog Becca whom he loved dearly. Jim was a 1972 graduate of El Dorado High School, and graduated from Lyon College in 1975 (then Arkansas College) with a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He worked as a laboratory technician for Great Lakes Chemical (now Lanxess) for 29 years. Jim was also a prolific writer, especially of poetry. He had published one book of his poetry and four chapbooks of poetry. Another book was in progress at the time of his death. He was a member and treasurer of the Poets Roundtable of Arkansas, member of the South Arkansas Poets of the Pines and was the former President of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. ROBERT C. BROWN JR.

R.C. Brown, Jr., 81, of El Dorado, passed away, Sunday, July 8, 2018 at Baptist Medical Health Center in Little Rock. He was born Feb. 17, 1937 to Robert Clarence Brown, Sr. and Sallie Brown in El Dorado. He retired from Lion Oil, Co., after 30 plus years as an E/I supervisor. While an hourly employee he was active in the IOUE #381 serving in several different positions. R.C. loved spending time with his family and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, and working except on Saturday while the Razorbacks were playing. R.C. loved the Lord and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Preceding him in death are his parents; four half-brothers, J.B. Honeycutt, H.F. Box, Lester Box, Chester Box; and daughter, Cynthia Ellyn Brown Saulsbury. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Martha Strickland Brown; son, Robert C. “Trey” Brown III (Sonya); sister, Nellie Brown McDonald all of El Dorado; two grandchildren, Robert “Quade” Brown, IV, Gage Brown, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at Young’s. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at Young’s Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Meeks and the Rev. CAPT. BAKER L. PEEBLES

Capt. Baker L. Peebles USN. (Ret), age 88, of Hermitage died Saturday, July 7, 2018 at his home. He was born March 25th, 1930 in Dumas, a son of the late Lawrence Peebles and Maurice Baker Peebles. He was a graduate of the Portland Public Schools System, attended the University of the Ozarks College where he was the first graduating Pharmacy class of 1952, and he retired from Pharmacy at Gannaway Drug Store in 2016. Baker spent his career as a Commander in the United States Navy with 26 years of service. In the Navy he served in Vietnam, he was one of few men to ever have five different commands in his career serving under Admiral Tidd and Admiral Zumwalt. Baker commanded Naval bases in the Barbados British West Indies, San Salvador, Bamahas, the Naval Reserve Station in Camden. He was Commander of recruiting in Little Rock, AR from 1972 till 1974, where he had the highest recruiting class in the nation, and his last Duty Command was in Argentia, Newfoundland Canada. Baker served two years in the Pentagon, Washington DC, working with the Joints Chief of Staff. Baker graduated the Navy Command and Staff Center in Newport, Rhode Island, he graduated the National War College, Class of 1974 in Washington, DC. In his career he received numerous awards for his service, Navy Commendation Medal w/1 Gold Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two Gold Stars, Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Citation (Gallantry Cross) Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/1 Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Color with Palm, Meritorious Unit Commendation w/1 Bronze Star. Baker was a 33rd -degree Master Mason, serving in Lodge 264 of Hermitage, and Smackover. He received the Pillar of Solomon Award, was a member of the Scottish Rite, the Lyons Club, the Rotary Club of Warren, AR and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hermitage. He is survived by his wife, Edith Hodges Peebles, whom he married December 25, 1952 in Smackover. Two sons, Larry Peebles and spouse Becky Anthony, Wynne, and Jeff Peebles and spouse Annette, Hermitage. A daughter Mandy Miles, Norphlet. Six grandchildren Missy Hodges, George Miles, Michael Peebles, Lena Peebles, David Peebles and James Peebles, Jr. Three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at Frazer’s Chapel. Burial will be in Holly Springs Cemetery with Military Honors by Frazer’s Funeral Home.
