SouthArk Board meets to discuss fire damage

The South Arkansas Community College Board of Trustees held a special meeting yesterday to discuss the fire damage sustained by the Administration Building in a fire that broke out a week and a half ago during severe storms in Union County.

Little Miss Arkansas Pageant to be held May 26 The Little Miss Arkansas Pageant will be held May 26 at the Hotel Hot Springs in Hot Springs. The deadline to enter is May 18. The pageant is open to any Arkansas girl up to age 17. There are five age divisions with a winner and two alternates in each. There is also photogenic and talent competition. Special event set for Saturday for Autism Awareness Month A special event Saturday in Smackover invites parents of any “special needs” children to attend and share resources in an effort to form a network for providers and parents. From 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, at 109 W. 8th St. in Smackover, each organization present will make a presentation of 10 minutes or less to help share information about available resources for parents, caregivers and children. Local election forum to be held Monday The Union County NAACP and the El Dorado-Union County Chamber of Commerce will hold a candidates forum Monday at the SouthArk College Library Auditorium. The forum will focus on two races, starting at 6:30 p.m. with the Democratic primary for Union County tax collector, which is a race between incumbent Paula Beard and challenger Karen Scott. Because there is no Republican candidate, the race will be decided in the May 22 primary. Immediately following will be the Republican candidates for El Dorado mayor: incumbent Frank Hash and challengers Bill Luther and Chris Lutman. The winner of the May 22 primary will face Democrat Veronica Creer-Smith in the November general election.

SouthArk to hold special board meeting today The South Arkansas Community College Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. today in room 160 of the Health Science Center to hear an update on the damage from a fire at the administration building earlier this month. JCPenney to host free super hero event Saturday In coordination with the release of “Marvel Avengers: Infinity War,” JCPenney stores nationwide, including in El Dorado, will host a special super hero event from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday. Children, who must be accompanied by an adult, are encouraged to attend dressed as their favorite super hero and learn how to create an “Infinity Gauntlet of Power” or Captain America mask free as part of the store’s monthly Kids Zone program. The program allows area children to enjoy a free, interactive workshop each month, including a workshop to make Mother’s Day flowers on May 12, creating a Father’s Day tie on June 16 and decorating sunglasses on July 21. The event will take place in the kids department in the store. Those who attend also will receive a coupon for 20 percent off all Hasbro toys, valid only Saturday. Democratic nominee for state office to speak in El Dorado Susan Inman, Democratic candidate for Arkansas Secretary of State, will campaign in Union County today and speak at the Union County Democratic Committee meeting tonight. Inman plans to meet with various community leaders in El Dorado throughout the day, before heading to the committee meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the South Arkansas Community College Library. Inman is the only Democrat seeking the office. She will face the winner of the Republican primary in the November general election. Republican candidates John Thurston and Trevor Drown will face off in the May 22 primary Republican Mark Martin is the current secretary of state and is prohibited from running for re-election under the state’s term limits amendment. Martin has served in the post since 2011.

Celebration: People attend the 115-year celebration of the Strong-Huttig School district on Saturday in Strong. The event featured fun and games along with a car and motorcycle contest. Colleges were present providing information for students and parents.
