Traffic accidents, downed trees, flooding tax county emergency personnel in wake of Gustav

Several accidents, a flooded Union County Sheriff’s patrol unit, downed trees and washed out roads have taxed county emergency personnel since Monday as the remnants of Hurricane Gustav have slowly raked across South Arkansas.

Union County Sheriff Ken Jones said Wednesday via e-mail that one of his patrol units flooded Tuesday night near Dollar Junction Road north of Huttig. The deputy left his unit during a response call, and the car was quickly overrun with water.

The vehicle will likely be a total loss, Jones said.
