Huttig residents fear consequences of school’s closure

News-Times/Jamie Davis  Doors closed  The Huttig Dairy Diner closed its doors a year ago when the population decline in the small town limited the number of customers at the business. The owners, Ruth and Richard Morgan, have listed the property for sale. The Morgans fear that the value of both the diner and their personal residence will decrease now that the school has been closed.

In the long ago year of 1958, Larry Hodge was a first grader at Huttig Elementary. His first day of school, a day already filled with all the normal trepidations, became even more anxious when his teacher announced that the students could be sent to school in Strong the following year.

“That sure did upset me because I didn’t want to go to school in Strong,” said Hodge, who now serves as the mayor of Huttig. “But that just shows you how long the rumors of consolidation with Strong have been going around in Huttig.”
