Local resident Gene Shankle will celebrate his 80th birthday on May 17. His family and friends will honor him from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the El Dorado-Union County Recreation Complex under one of the pavilions.

He has been married to Bennie Jean Shankle for 64 years and is the father of four children: Billy Shankle of Farmerville, La., Lennie Shankle of Natchitoches, La., Randy Shankle of Fayetteville and Pam Carr of El Dorado. He has 11 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
