John Edmond Sims, 80, of Junction City, died Thursday, July 24, 2008, at his home.

He was born March 26, 1928, the son of Mack Henry and Martha Charles Sims. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, superintendent of Sunday School, member of the layman department, and director-general of the Ouachita District Congress of Christian Education. He attended Union Parish schools and was a graduate of Grambling State University with a bachelor’s of science degree in education. He received his master’s degree in education from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He was retired from the Junction City School District after 40 years working as a teacher, coach and bus driver. He also served on the Junction City School Board. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his paternal grandparents, Henry Bailey and Rosa Cullen Sims; and maternal grandparents, James Allen and Sophronia Clark Charles; three brothers, James, A.D. and Roy Sims; and one sister, Madie Atkins.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Sims of Junction City; a son, Ronnie E. Sims of Junction City; two daughters, Mary D. Stafford of Ringgold, La., and Wanda L. Cook of Junction City; two brothers, the Rev. Robert Sims and Calvin Sims, both of Milwaukee; three sisters, Maxie Sims and Barbara J. Hammond, both of Rockford, Ill., and Classie Melton of Milwaukee; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church on Cordell with the Rev. E. Edward Jones officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Norphlet under the direction of Sims Mortuary.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church on Cordell. Family hour will begin at 6 p.m. today.
