An El Dorado woman called recently to report a family member had almost been duped by one of those authentic-looking fake checks. The check originated in Gainesville, Fla.

A Google search produced the website www.ripoffreport.com, which had a posting from a woman in Texas who was drawn in by a similar scheme. This woman was told she had won $57,000 and all she had to do was deposit the check for $3,977.65 to cover administrative and processing fees. This had to be done by a certain date. Supposedly, she would receive the balance of her prize after the fees were paid.
