Last call for postage for a penny less.

Mailing a letter will cost a penny more beginning Monday, with the cost of a first-class stamp rising to 42 cents.

The last increase was in May 2007 – from 39 cents to 41 cents – and that was up from 37 cents in June 2002.

A 2006 law regulating the U.S. Postal Service allows the agency to increase rates with 45 days’ notice as long as changes are within the rate of inflation for the previous 12 months.
