Danny Joe Dumas, 68, of Shreveport, La., died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, after a battle with cancer.

The son of Ernest F. Dumas and Carmen Ercell Dailey Dumas, he was born May 14, 1940, in Emerson.

He was a life and health insurance agent for 32 years, earning professional certifications as a Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant and Registered Health Underwriter. In 1979 he was elected to the Caddo Parish Police Jur, and in 1984 he was elected as one of its charter members. He was chairman of the jail committee that led to construction of Caddo Correctional Center, and he served on the committee that led to the construction of the Caddo Parish Juvenile Detention and Court. For several years he served as chairman of Criminal and Juvenile Justice Committee of the Louisiana Police Jury Association. He was a member of Summer Grove Baptist Church and a member of Gideon’s International.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Mills Dumas, of Shreveport; a brother, Delbert Dumas of Shreveport; sister, Myrna Ketchens of Shreveport; his children, Danny J. Dumas Jr. of Shreveport, Richard F. Dumas and Kim Rhodes of Junction City, Steve Dumas of Atlanta, Ga., Danita Gwen Dumas Wood of El Dorado, Kevin T. Reeves and Vickie Doss, of Shreveport, Bennie Reeves of Shreveport, Karen Reeves Terrell of Natchitoches, La., and Kathy Reeves Holt of Nashville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, in the sanctuary of Summer Grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. todayat Centuries Memorial Funeral Home.
