Billy Joe Campbell, 74, of El Dorado, passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at Medical Center of South Arkansas.

He was born April 7, 1934, in Mt. Holly, Union County, to Marion Campbell and Verda Smith Campbell.

Billy Joe retired from the El Dorado Police Department after 20 years as a patrol officer, the Union County Sheriff’s Office after 20 years as a transportation officer, McMillian Oil after 8 years, and worked part time for the local funeral homes in El Dorado. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he ushered and worked in the children’s department.

Preceding him in death are his parents; six sisters; a nephew, Edward Ginger; and a niece, Sandra Kinley.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Margaret Campbell of El Dorado; a daughter, Lisa Sawyers and husband Ross of Hurst, Texas; grandchildren, Andrew Sawyers and Barrett Sawyers both of Hurst; brothers-in-law, John Lee Cottrell of El Dorado, Owen Bailey and wife Sue of St. Louis, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Lavion Soo and husband, Houng of Burke, Va., Glenda Singel of Duncansville, Pa.; nephew, Shawn Bailey; nieces, Theresa Singel, Leslie Soo and Lynell Carr; great-niece, Kim Hogue and family; and great-nephew, Michael Carr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 9, 2008, in Young’s Chapel with the Rev. Faron Rogers and Ross Sawyers officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
