Tommie Jean Dawkins, 74, of Strong, died Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Medical Center of South Arkansas.

She was born May 15, 1934, in El Dorado, the daughter of Earnest Smith and Julia Mae Dawkins Smith. She was a graduate of AM&N College, now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She served for 13 years as a teacher in the Huttig and Urbana School districts. She was a member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James Dawkins Jr.; and two brothers, Odie Smith and Mose S. Smith.

Survivors include her husband, James Dawkins Sr. of Strong; three daughters, Karen Seweje and Lorett Lovett of El Dorado, and Janet Dawkins of Oakland, Calif.; one sister, Opal Jones of Gettysburg, Md.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Springhill Baptist Church in Oakland, La., with the Rev. Dennis Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery in Oakland under the direction of Andrews Funeral Home.

Public viewing will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today and 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

The family will meet with friends after the service in the fellowship hall of Immanuel Baptist Church of El Dorado.
