MURRY WILLETT

Willett
Murry Willett, 93, died Sunday, June 29, 2008, after a brief illness.

Born at Lisbon on Jan. 15, 1915, he was the first of six children born to Scott and Corinne Willett. After his high school graduation, Murry majored in business administration at Tyler Commercial College in Texas. He later studied construction engineering through the International Correspondence School.

In 1936. Murry married Lois Mayfield of El Dorado. When the war began they traveled the U.S. with daughter, Gloria Jean, “following the overtime” in defense plants. In 1944 while working in the Atomic Energy plant in Hanford, Wash., he decided to join the Marines. The work he was doing there could have precluded his being drafted, but with one brother serving in Europe and another in the Pacific, he felt it was his duty to join the fight. He served in the Pacific war theater until the war ended.

Donald was born in 1947 to Murry and Lois. In the years that followed, Murry began working for Blaw Knox/Dravo Co. out of Pittsburgh. As a field project manager, he spent many years building chemical plants in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Colorado, Washington, Louisiana and Kentucky.

During their 65-year marriage, Murry and Lois lived in over 13 states and Venezuela. They retired in El Dorado in the 1980’s. Murry will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity. He loved his family, his friends, and his church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; sister, Albertine Meek; and brothers, James, Max, and Randolph.

Survivors include daughter Gloria Green (Will)of Lonoke; son, Dr. Don Willett (Janet) of Massachusetts; brother, John Willett of El Dorado, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. today at Young’s.

Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Diffey officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.
