GERRY A. MORRISGerry A. Morris of Smackover passed away on June 6, 2008, at Medical Center of South Arkansas. Born on Aug. 22, 1926, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late George Avalon and Vera Joan (Solomon) Avalon. She was a secretary for Southern Folders & Index for over 30 years; a member of First United Methodist Church in Smackover and was a member of the Eastern Star. Gerry Loved reading; Fox News and pro football, especially the Chicago Bears. In her later life, she found joy with her coffee-drinking buddies. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, James Henry Morris; a daughter, Gwen Morris Costa; two sisters, Marjorie Avalon and Doris E. Dahlgren; two brothers, Dr. Phillip G. Avalon and Richard P. Avalon. Survivors include two sons, Louisiana State Rep. Jim Morris and his wife, Kellie, of Belcher, La., and Bill Morris of Oil City, La.; one daughter, Karen Scott Mosby and her husband, Ted, of Smackover; beloved Nana of five grandchildren, Krispen Tirpitz, Kourtney and Ashton Morris, Zac and Kelly Scott; two sisters-in-law, Kennon Freeland and Margaret Avalon. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at First United Methodist Church in Smackover with Pastor Leon Dixon officiating. Interment will be in Smackover Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors in El Dorado. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the St. Labre Indian School, P.O. Box 216, Ashland, MT 59003 or the Otter Creek School, c/o Special Education Department, where her daughter Gwen taught for almost 30 years at 1600 Otter Creek Parkway, Little Rock, AR 72210.
