Kid Day event

being observed



Today is Absolutely Incredible Kid Day, sponsored by Camp Fire USA.

Adults are encouraged to write letters of love and support to the children in their lives during the day, according to Courtney Post, executive director of the El Dorado Camp Fire USA office.

She said letters can be left on a pillow, mailed, stuck in a lunchbox or e-mailed – any way that lets children know they are loved.

Sponsors of this year’s event are First Financial Bank, AmerCable, El Dorado Chemical Co. and Timberland Bank.

A fundraising luncheon will be held today at the El Dorado Golf and Country Club. For more information about the event and Absolutely Incredible Kid Day, call Post at 862-3463.



RSVP dance set

at Senior Center



The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program dance, for persons ages 55 and older, will be held from 7 until 10 p.m. on Friday at Champagnolle Landing Senior Center, 910 E. Fourth St., El Dorado.

The dance will feature the music of Night Hawk. Admission is $6 per person and no smoking or alcohol will be allowed.



Strong-Huttig board will meet



STRONG – The Strong-Huttig School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the board room at Strong High School, according to Boyd Fife, board president.

Saul Lusk recently announced his retirement as superintendent of the district.

The purpose of the meeting is for board members to review resumes of superintendent applicants. Those attending are asked to bring copies of applicant resumes.

Members of the board are scheduled to choose applicants for possible interviews on March 31.



El Dorado city

offices to close



All El Dorado city offices, with the exception of the police and fire departments, will be closed Friday for Good Friday.



Audit report

given to board



STRONG – An audit report was presented by Mike Cobb of Cobb and Suskie of Little Rock when the Strong-Huttig School Board met in regular session Monday.

Cobb pointed out to the board that operating costs have escalated over the past few years, while the district’s revenues have remained the same. The board was advised to budget wisely and cut costs whenever possible, according to Saul Lusk, superintendent.

The board accepted resignations from English/speech teacher Jennifer Brewster, first grade teacher Amy Farris, second grade teacher Deborah Vestal, kindergarten teacher Billie Martinez and gifted/talented teacher Linda Newbury. All resignations are effective at the end of the school year.

The Junior High School Quiz Bowl team was recognized for finishing in second place at the state competition held last month.

The board voted to re-hire elementary, junior and senior high school staff for the 2008-2009 school year.

Several members of the community voiced concerns over Lusk’s resignation. No action was taken on the matter.

The board announced that a public meeting concerning the millage increase will be held at Gardner-Strong Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. on April 1. Senator Shane Broadway is scheduled to speak at the meeting.

The school board’s April meeting has been moved to 6:30 p.m. on April 14 at the Strong High School library.



Board makes

motion for hiring



JUNCTION CITY – The Junction City School Board made a motion to hire Danny Thomas, currently superintendent in Clinton, to replace Gary Wayman as superintendent, effective July 1.

The Junction City School Board met in regular session on Tuesday, according to Wayman.

High school social studies teacher Joy Mason gave a presentation on her class’s recent trip to Washington, DC.

A report on the Dual State Basketball tournament was presented by Coach Dale Hux.

The board voted to approve the 2008-2009 school calendar.

A tuition agreement was approved for an alternative school to be shared with the Smackover School District.



Chicken show

to be conducted



The South Central Regional Classic 32nd Annual Chicken Show is scheduled for April 5 at the Union County Fairgrounds. Those who wish to enter chickens need to contact Billy and Debbie Atwood at (870) 942-7361 by March 27. Birds need to have either a pullorum test within the last 90 days, or be in the NPIP program.
