Just the thought of those plump, ripe, red tomatoes being a health hazard is enough to make folks like us shed a few tears. Alas, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about health hazards associated with – gasp – raw red tomatoes.

About 150 people in 16 states have been sickened by salmonellosis from tomatoes. The FDA’s Food Safety and Security Staff is working to determine the origins of illnesses now considered an “outbreak.”
