Ward pushes values in bid for JP seat

Dr. Steven Ward believes his values make him the right fit for District 1 Justice of the Peace.

A two-way race is underway between Ward and opponent Mike Dumas for the District 1 position. Ward is also running for a spot on the Union County Republican Committee, saying he would like to have input on the function of the Republican Party. He will face off against his Democratic opponent in the Nov. 6 General Election.

Ward previously served as District 1 JP from 2010 through 2012. He holds a doctorate of veterinary medicine and owns Wards Veterinary Clinic.

Ward said being a Christian capitalist is what makes him the best person for the job. He said government spending should be done “in the best interest of the public,” and that it is his goal to make Union County a better place to live.

Ward is from El Dorado and studied veterinary science and medicine at Texas A&M University. His wife, Judy Ward, currently serves as Ward 2, Position 2 El Dorado alderman. He is 66 years old and has previously worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Texas Animal Health Commission.

The office of Justice of the Peace is a part-time position. It paid $5,522 in 2017.
