Republican Stormey Primm has been elected as Union County’s new coroner.

Primm won the general election with about 54.75 percent of the vote. Primm was one of only two candidates seeking the position, winning with about 6,732 votes cast for him.

Primm said he was feeling great about the win.

“I’m glad we had a great turnout. I’m not sure if 12,000 is a record or anything, but I feel great,” Primm said, referencing the total number of votes cast in the race.

He added that he will attend a symposium with other coroner-elects in December and will begin working with the Arkansas Coroner’s Association to begin staff training in January.

Opponent Martavious Carrigan, a Democrat, received about 45.25 percent of the vote, or 5,565 votes.

Carrigan could not be reached Tuesday night for comment.

Primm was initially set to face off against incumbent Coroner Curtis Butterfield. Butterfield passed away in July, and Carrigan was selected as the new candidate later that month.

Primm ran on a platform of modernization, education and experience.

“I feel like I poured everything into it and the numbers reflected that,” Primm said. “Now I feel like I have to step away from a political party and focus on the people.”
